During the pre-Islamic period until 622 AD, the city was known as Yathrib. With the emigration of the Islamic Prophet Muhammad, the city’s name was changed to al-Madinah al-Munawwarah. The tomb of Prophet Muhammad is located in Medinah, and so the city is called the City of the Prophet. Medinah is the destination for the large number of Muslims who perform Umrah. Along with Mecca, Medinah is the most important Hajj destination in the world and millions of Muslims visit this holy city each year.
