Lankaran is the administrative center and the largest city of the Lankaran district. An important stop on international caravan routes in antiquity, in 2021, the city was included in the UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN). Considered the gastronomic capital of Azerbaijan, Lankaran is a fertile area at the intersection of the Caspian Sea and the Talysh Mountains. The district is known for its tea plantations and citrus orchards, as well as the Hirkan Forest. With up to 1,800 mm of rainfall per year, Lankaran is Azerbaijan’s wettest region.
