Izmir's legendary beauty – its mountains blooming with flowers – has been the subject of poems and anthems. The city of Izmir is relatively easygoing, presenting a modern urban face alongside daily pleasures such as crunchy, aromatic simits and tasty Izmir-style kumru sandwiches, while the Izmir province offers inviting coastal settlements with beaches and turquoise seas; many of the area’s most prominent tourist attractions and holiday destinations are easily accessible from the city center, including popular vacation spots like Sığacık, Dikili, Foça, Alaçatı, Karaburun and Çeşme. In addition to sea-sand-sun, the region’s historical sites include Ephesus, one of the most famous ancient cities, and Pergamon, a settlement dating from the third century BCE.
