Tlemcen, originally called Pomaria (meaning "orchards") during the Roman period, has fallen respectively under the rule of Arabs, Ottomans, Barbary, and the French. The contemporary name of the city, Tlemcen, is derived from the words for "water" and "spring" in Arabian.
