Known as Amisos in antiquity, the city of Samsun is still a significant trade port and the most developed city in the Black Sea Region. With its rivers, streams, creeks, plateaus, forests and sea, the Samsun province is an agricultural center set between the Kızılırmak and Yeşilırmak deltas. Both the city and province are prominent tourist destinations, attracting visitors seeking to relax amid natural beauty as well as to explore the area’s historical and cultural artifacts. It should be noted that the city has a significant role in Turkish history: The founding leader of the Turkish Republic, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk arrived via the Bandırma steamboat in Samsun on May 19, 1919, initiating the National Struggle for independence.
Within the city of Samsun, the Bandırma Ferry and Mücadele Parkı Open Air National Museum are one of the many notable touristic spots. Other highlights include the Samsun Atatürk Monument, Amazon Village and the Gazi Museum. The lively Atakum beach features hotels, restaurants and cafes, while Amisos Hill offers panoramic views of the city and its surroundings. Outside of the city, you’ll find Black Sea natural beauties in abundance, including the Havza Hot Springs, Şahinkaya Canyon and the Karacaören Waterfall.
