North of Mesopotamia in the Southeastern Anatolia Region, Diyarbakır offers visitors a unique cultural experience amid its narrow streets, colorful bazaars, and UNESCO World Heritage Sites such as the Four-Legged (Dört Ayaklı) Minaret, the Diyarbakır City Walls, the Hasanpaşa and Sülüklü Inns (Hans) and the Grand Mosque (Ulu Camii). Diyarbakır is known for its natural beauty as well as its cultural heritage. A different side of the city can be explored in the Botan Valley and during walks along the Tigris River.
Apart from shopping, the bazaars in the city center present a terrific opportunity to meet local artisans and view traditional handicrafts. The coppersmith bazaar, in particular, is worth a visit.
The food of Diyarbakır is as rich as its geography and history. The area is renowned for its kebab variants and stuffed kataifi (dolma kadayıf). Every corner of the city has little eateries where you may sample regional cuisine.
