Santiago has been serving as Chile's political and cultural center since its foundation in 1541. The churches and government buildings erected during the colonial era highlight the city's historical significance.
One such structure is La Chascona, the former home of poet Pablo Neruda. Set in the bohemian Bellavista neighborhood, La Chascona is now a museum with a collection of artworks, including a portrait by Diego Rivera. In addition to the house museum, Bellavista hosts a number of vibrant art galleries and theaters. In the city center, the Plaza de Armas is a landmark housing a cathedral and other historic buildings.
San Cristóbal Hill, another Santiago landmark, offers sweeping views of the city. The hill, accessible via a cable car, sits in the center of the expansive Metropolitan Park.
If you have time to spare, you can explore areas outside the city, such as the wine regions of the Maipo Valley to the south and the Casablanca Valley to the west. As well, the coast of the Pacific Ocean is less than two hours’ drive from the Santiago center.
