Heraklion International Airport (HER), also known as Nikos Kazantzakis, is the second busiest airport in Greece, serving about 5.5 million passengers annually. The airport is named after the Greek philosopher and writer of the same name who was born in the city. The passenger terminal offers a variety of facilities including a duty-free store, a bank, currency exchange services, information desk, medical facility, and car and bike rental offices.

To manage passenger crowds during the summer months, a new airport at Kastelli Pediados is currently under construction. The new facility is expected to be completed in 2015, at which time operations at Heraklion International Airport will cease.

Getting to the Airport in Heraklion

From the city center, it takes about 7 minutes to travel by taxi to Heraklion International Airport. Visitors can save money by taking a bus instead, which is comparatively less expensive. From bus station A in Heraklion, visitors can travel by bus to Heraklion Airport, with a journey time of about 20 minutes.
