Algiers, which means “islands” in Arabic, is the capital of Algeria, the biggest country in Africa. For thousands of years, this ancient city, located near the Atlas Mountains in North Africa, has hosted numerous civilizations including the Egyptians, Romans, Ottomans, and latterly the French until Algeria gained independence in 1962.
