It is believed that the tomb of Ali Ibn Abi Talib (Imam Ali), the first Imam of the Shiites, is located in Najaf, making the city greatly important to the Shiites. The city was built by Harun al-Rashid in 791 AD and today Najaf is called the “basin of science.”
