Built by Arabic merchants in the 11th century, Mombasa was ruled by the English and was part of the Zanzibar Archipelago. Later in 1963, Mombasa joined Kenya. The city is connected to the mainland by bridges and ferries. The city is famous for its coral reefs and magnificent beaches which are surrounded by palm trees and make Mombasa a great location for scuba divers.
