The roots of some of Muscat’s existing inhabitants date back to the 2ndcentury BC. Muscat was formed following a volcanic eruption and was called Umm An Nar which means “the mother of fire.” Italian archaeologists discovered an ancient fishing village on the shores of Oman in 1970. This ancient city with its impressive architectural structures is a popular tourist destination.
